Jack of All Trades – Nelson Metal Art

Last month I spent a couple hours at the Jack of All Trades market, which takes place the second Saturday of each month at Jack London Square in Oakland. It was my first time there, and I was pleasantly surprised at the variety of quality, hand-made goods and food made by people from Oakland and all over California.

Jack of All Trades – Jack London Square in Oakland

Entering the market.

There was lots to see, eat, touch, feel, and try on at the market, but I want to spotlight the artist and vendor that I enjoyed the most today: Nelson Metal Art from Hughson, CA.

Meet the Nelson Family: Daughter Nelson, Pa Nelson (chief welder), and Ma Nelson. They make things out of stuff!

The Nelson Family takes old tools and gadgets and brings them to life as fun art pieces. Cheese graders, forks, and spoons from the kitchen blow in the breeze as wind chimes…

Oil cans, flashlights, and grills turn into dragonflies…

Sockets and wrenches breath new life as book ends. I took this one home with me…too cute to pass up!

Basketball-playing chains and gears fly high and slam dunk…

There are one-eyed pirates, tennis players, and nutcrackers that stand tall, strong, and ready for action…

There are golf players that will one day make it to Pebble Beach Pro Am…

And fishermen reeling in tonight’s dinner…

Pa Nelson does the welding and the family brings their creative goods out to Oakland from Hughson, Ca (which is between Modesto and Turlock in the Central Valley.) They currently do not have a web or Etsy site, but for now you can find them at Jack of All Trades the second Saturday of each month or by contacting:
